Her Royal Highness's Annual Christmas Service of Carols Honours Community Volunteers

Her Royal Highness has organised her yearly Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey, with attendees featuring dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have supported their local areas.

The large audience will enjoy a mix of carols, music and readings from performers including Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.

Focusing on Kindness and Compassion

The focus of the concert, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.

In the audience are Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain tumour, and who founded an organisation, a support fund, to support families who have a terminally ill child.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an extraordinary difference to the circumstances of individuals," Her Royal Highness stated in a letter ahead of the concert.

A Gradual Return

The princess has been making her own measured re-emergence to public life after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, last month delivering her major oration since 2023, in which she reflected on recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Musical Talent and Access

Attendees entering the Abbey will be entertained by young musicians backed by the charitable trust Future Talent, set up with the help of the late Duchess of Kent to widen access to instrumental training.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from Wales, has been supported by the trust, with funding assisting with musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "amazing" to be performing at tonight's service.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," Carys said. She is now a student at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to develop their musical skills.

Generations Gathering

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who plays the euphonium, will likewise attend the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many notable figures," she said.

Within the audience will be representatives of different generations.

That will encompass young Saphia Turner, nine, recipient of a prize for youthful altruism, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to collect donations for local food charities.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been festooned with specially made wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

Taking to the stage will be singer Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "the perfect culmination."

The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be broadcast on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
